The Rotary and Rotaract clubs of Bwebajja united and held the Namayingo Impact Project on July 27, 2024, in Namayingo District, Eastern Uganda. This exceptional initiative showcased the true power of community service, bringing together Rotarians, Rotaractors, healthcare professionals, and community members to create lasting change in Namayingo District.
Extending Essential Medical Services
The heart of the project was a medical camp at Syanyonja Health Centre III that offered a wide range of services to the local community. These included dental care, eye check-ups, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, cancer screening, hypertension screening, family planning services, and general medical consultations. The impact was profound, with at least 2,500 community members receiving treatment for various ailments. The camp’s highlight was the safe delivery of a baby, aptly named Baby Hope, symbolizing the hope and new beginnings the project brought to the community.
In addition to the medical services, the camp also saw the distribution of mosquito nets and mama kits to pregnant mothers, helping to safeguard maternal and child health in the region.
Addressing Water Challenges
Recognizing the critical need for clean water, the project also donated a water borehole to Syanyonja Health Centre III and the surrounding community. This borehole was handed over to a newly established water management committee, ensuring its maintenance and sustainability. The borehole is expected to significantly alleviate the water challenges faced by the community, providing a reliable source of clean water and reducing the water bill for the health centre.
Environmental Conservation and Economic Empowerment
The Namayingo Impact Project went beyond healthcare by contributing to environmental conservation and economic empowerment. A total of 2,000 shade and commercial trees were planted on over four acres of land belonging to St. Andrew Church of Uganda Lwangosia, a community church in the area. This initiative aims to improve the local environment and provide a future source of income for the church and the broader community.
Community Engagement and Sustainability
The success of the Namayingo Impact Project was rooted in a thorough community assessment. A team led by the Projects Director visited Syanyonja Health Centre III and held discussions with the health centre’s in-charge and local community leaders. These conversations revealed the major health concerns in the area, including access to clean water, the need for mosquito nets, and maternal and child health support.
The project’s impact will continue to benefit the community long after its completion. The borehole’s sustainability is ensured by the community water management committee, while the tree project will be supervised by a church committee with support from a forestry expert.
